What makes the Olla Irrigation System different
Unlike conventional surface watering, the Olla system uses capillary action through unglazed terracotta to release water only when the surrounding soil dries out. The Olla Irrigation System is a terracotta vessel that delivers water to plant roots through capillary action. Fill the pot with water, bury it in the soil near the plant, and the porous clay wall releases moisture as the surrounding soil dries out — no electricity or moving parts needed.
The 250 ml capacity is designed for medium-sized potted plants, including herbs, vegetables, and ornamental container plants. It works best in pots with a diameter of approximately 15–25 cm, depending on the plant's water consumption.
The irrigation vessel is made of terracotta (unglazed clay) with a natural cork seal on the fill opening. Both materials are biodegradable and free of synthetic components.
The terracotta body requires no cleaning or replacement under normal use. Periodically check the cork seal for debris and refill the vessel as the water level drops. The porous clay wall does not clog under regular garden use.
Terracotta is not frost-proof. Remove the Olla from the soil before the first frost and store it in a dry, frost-free location to prevent cracking. The cork seal should also be inspected for damage after winter storage.
