Frequently Asked Questions

What are carabiners used for?▾

Carabiners are versatile connecting elements used primarily in climbing, mountaineering, camping and outdoor equipment. They are also used for hammocks, rope attachments, organizing gear, on backpacks or for everyday use such as key rings.

What types of carabiners are there?▾

Basically, there are screwgate carabiners with a locking sleeve, snap carabiners with automatic closure, wiregate carabiners for quick clipping as well as special shapes such as oval carabiners, D-shaped carabiners, HMS carabiners and asymmetric carabiners. Each design is tailored to specific applications and load directions.

What is the difference between screwgate carabiners and snap carabiners?▾

Screwgate carabiners have a manually operated locking sleeve that reliably prevents unintentional opening – they are the safe choice for climbing and belaying applications. Snap carabiners have a spring closure that allows quick and easy clipping, and are ideal for securing equipment, light loads or everyday use.

What load capacity and markings are important for carabiners?▾

The load capacity of carabiners is specified in kilonewtons (kN) and differs depending on the load direction: longitudinal, transverse and open gate. For climbing and safety applications, only certified carabiners with CE marking and EN or UIAA standards should be used. The required breaking load depends on the specific intended use.

What materials are carabiners made of?▾

Carabiners are predominantly made of high-strength aluminum or steel. Aluminum carabiners are lighter and therefore the preferred choice in climbing, while steel carabiners are heavier but extremely robust and abrasion-resistant – they are particularly suitable for rope access work, industrial applications and frequent use.

How do I properly maintain and care for carabiners?▾

Carabiners should be regularly inspected for damage, cracks, deformation or heavy abrasion. Dirt can be removed with lukewarm water and mild soap; aggressive chemicals should be avoided. After a heavy fall or if visible damage occurs, the carabiner must be replaced for safety reasons. The gate mechanism can occasionally be lightly oiled with a suitable resin-free care product.

Are carabiners also suitable for everyday use?▾

Yes, smaller snap carabiners and lightweight aluminum carabiners are ideal for everyday use – for example as key rings, for attaching water bottles to backpacks, for dog leashes, sun sails or bags. However, for safety-relevant applications, only certified carabiners with the appropriate standard should be used.

What should I look for when buying carabiners?▾

Pay attention to the intended use: For climbing and mountaineering, certified screwgate carabiners with UIAA or EN standard are required. For camping and leisure, lightweight snap carabiners are often sufficient. Important criteria are the material, the design, the breaking load specified in kN, the weight and handling with gloves. High-quality branded products offer tested quality and reliable safety.
